Project context
Jannie chose the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House "his favourite place in the world" for a black-tie celebration of his 50th birthday. He wanted the evening to feel extraordinary and to share it with the family and friends closest to him. The brief began with photographing every person and couple as they arrived, then following the night naturally as the room filled with conversation, beautiful food, speeches, live music and deeply personal surprises. I photograph events at the Sydney Opera House regularly, but this night felt especially meaningful. From the architecture and table details to live opera singers Blake and Michaela, the string musicians, spontaneous laughter and tears, my aim was to preserve not just how the evening looked, but how it felt.

The completed gallery tells the night as one continuous story: anticipation at the entrance, the beauty of the Utzon Room, an elegant dinner, performances that brought the room to life and speeches that moved people to tears. The combination of polished portraits, wide atmospheric scenes and close candid moments gives Jannie a record of the people, place and feeling that made his 50th so special. It was a privilege to photograph a celebration created with so much care at a venue that means so much to him and to preserve what genuinely felt like one of the best nights of his life.
